Monday qualifier Frank Lickliter II is having a resurgence of sorts in Phoenix
It took a lot for Frank Lickliter II to make it into this week’s Waste Management field. Instead getting an outright invite to the event, he had to Monday qualify for a spot in the tournament, grabbing one of three spots from a six-way playoff.
The six-way playoff summed up the way things have gone for Lickliter in the last couple of years. Nothing has come easy.
There used to be a time where he would have been flying in and enjoying the pre-tournament scene on a Monday. After capturing the top spot a Q-School in 2007, Lickliter has bounced back and forth between the PGA Tour and the Nationwide for the last couple of years, spending most of 2010 on the Nationwide and trying to Monday qualify or secure tournament invites when he could.
But things could be turning around this week for the tour journeyman. He’s currently 8-under for the week, eight shots back of second round leader Tommy Gainey. While he most likely won’t win this week, it’s always good to see guys like Lickliter taking advantage of opportunities on tour. Most tour pros will tell you that the average tour career is filled with highs and lows; Lickliter is a prime example of a player who’s enjoyed the highest peaks (winning twice on tour) and the lowest lows.
Hopefully his strong showing this week is a sign that he’s headed in the right direction.
