Golf without discretion

Maybe Phil Mickelson should get sick before every tournament

Phil Mickelson loves being sick. Seriously, the guy thrives off having a bad head cold and nausea, knowing full well he has to play golf the following day.

Don’t believe me? Mickelson won the in 2001 at Torrey Pines and at Doral last year after fighting the flu before and during the aforementioned tournaments. There’s something about coughing and vomiting that brings out the best game in Lefty.

So it shouldn’t be a surprise to see Mickelson’s name near the top of the leader board this week after hearing of the 48-hour bug he’d been dealing with that supposedly left him dehydrated and in need of an IV prior to Thursday first round.

“The last two times I’ve fainted and woken up in a pool of vomit, I’ve won,” Mickelson said after Thursday’s first round. “Laying there on the floor wondering where I am, a good omen came over me.”

He better hope he stays sick a little while longer. Mickelson is just one shot off the lead at Quail Hollow after a flawless second round that included an eagle, two birdies and 10 straight pars. I can’t even recall the last time I saw a Mickelson scorecard that didn’t include one or two bogeys. He may want to consider getting a flu strain injected into his system before every tournament.
