Phil Mickelson is alive and well, thank you very much!
This would have been nice a couple of weeks ago, but I guess we’ll take what we can get from Phil Mickelson. The defending champ — who looked more like a PGA rookie recently — fired an opening round 8-under 63 to take the lead at the Northern Trust Open. Lefty had a laissez faire attitude about him recently that was emanating from his golf game. He had one round lower than 70 so far in his starts on the west coast. And considering how prolific he’s been in his home state in recent years (16 of his 34 wins have been on the west coast), the start was starting to make many worry that he was losing his edge.
I guess we were all overreacting, right? One can only hope. Like Tiger, the tour needs Phil more than ever. Hopefully this is the start of a fruitful run for the third best player in the world.
